As Memorial Day Nears, a Single Image That Continues to Haunt

In 2005, The Rocky Mountain News published a special series called The Final Salute. The articles and photos would both win Pulitzers for their somber and respectful view of the Marines at Buckley Air Force Base who travel with and watch over the bodies of their fallen comrades.

In the top photo, the pregnant wife of Second Lt. Jim Cathey refused to leave him on the night before his funeral. So the Marines made her a bed, and then, as they had done the two nights before, they stood guard over his body.

It is the most moving view of a tradition that has stood with the Corps since its beginning - Never leave a Marine behind.

On the 23rd of this month, just two days ago, Second Lt. Travis A Morgado of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, US Army was killed by an IED near Zharay in Afghanistan. Lt. Morgado represents the 1982nd American casualty in Operation Enduring Freedom. He was from San Jose, and was 25 years old.

I only ask that while you are taking a dip in the pool or firing up the grill this weekend, you take a moment to remember those who have given their lives in service to their country, and their families and loved ones who must now carry on with only the memory of their brave sacrifice.
